Resplendent Shrub Frog

A Rare Jewel from Western Ghats of Munnar

The Resplendent Shrub Frog (Raorchestes resplendens) is one of the most remarkable amphibians found in the high-altitude grasslands of Munnar. Endemic to the Western Ghats, this tiny frog exists nowhere else in the world, making every sighting a truly special experience.

Appearance

Despite its small size, the frog stands out with its vibrant orange body, reddish-orange markings, and striking golden eyes. Its brilliant colours provide excellent camouflage among moss-covered grasses while making it a favourite subject for macro photographers.

Habitat & Behaviour

This species inhabits the cool, misty shola-grassland ecosystem around Munnar. It is most active during the monsoon, when males call from dense vegetation to attract mates. Unlike many frogs, it develops directly from egg to froglet, without a free-swimming tadpole stage.

Conservation

With a very limited distribution, the Resplendent Shrub Frog is vulnerable to habitat loss and climate change. Protecting the fragile grasslands of the Western Ghats is essential for its survival, ensuring that future generations can continue to witness this extraordinary amphibian in its natural home.
